While spending last summer in coastal Connecticut, one of my favorite pastimes became sitting on the docks. The public dinghies are so low your eye level is practically the surface of the water, as if you were somehow sitting below it.

I would find myself entranced by the gentle rocking of the dock, the overlapping waves of passing boats, the way the scope of my life seemed to pale before the ever-rising tide. I was hardly a person anymore; just a creature with eyes and a mass.

The water would have crept up to my ankles, then my ribs, then my eyes, and I would have sat there and let it.

This chair imagines what would happen if you let yourself be submerged into the sea. It imagines a boardwalk reclaimed by the ocean – and what creatures might emerge.
