Olivia Kuang

Growing up with a strong interest in both art and engineering, Olivia likes to think of her Furniture Design major as an “artsy engineering” degree.

To her, aesthetics and form are not only equally as important as structure and function: They are also fundamentally intertwined, and in the best designs, they bring out the better parts of each other.

Olivia also considers material to be a pivotal part of any piece. She believes that deeper understanding of a material’s properties gives someone more precision over how they can utilize it, and that precision only helps to sharpen a designer’s creative toolbox.

Carrying this mindset with her, she has worked across mediums in wood, metal, textiles, painting, and more, along with conducting research on biomaterials and metal-based pigments.

Olivia Kuang is a current junior pursuing a BFA in Furniture Design at the Rhode Island School of Design.
